Your First Taxi – Dealer or No Dealer?
If your answer is yes, consider that taxis for sale for dealers have advantages and disadvantages from buying from a private individual. The legal aspect of the taxi you buy from an individual will be lower but remember you may get an absolute bargain! Dealers cannot provide all the information as to what the taxi has been through before being put up for sale, thinks like crashes, body work and other problems which may have occured.
Dealers can’t be responsible for everything that may have happened to the car in the past – whether it was in an accident, had some paint job done or any other stuff. Even though the seller suppose to tell you stuff like that they can just pretend they “forgot” and pretty much nothing can be done about it.
When buying a taxi, you should ask for the vehicle’s service history and other repair bills. If a seller is unable to produce those documents, then it could signal a reason to be cautious. It may mean that the taxi has had non-standard replacement parts installed. Not only that, but if the seller does have the information, you know that the taxi is probably well-maintained. One last thing to verify with the vehicle repair and maintenance is that whoever performed work on the car was reputable, and that it wasn’t simply the owner’s buddies.
Here is a list of some common questions to ask the seller:
1) How long has the vehicle been in your possession?
2) How many people have used the taxi aside from you?
3) Is the odometer reading accurate?
4) Why did you decide to get rid of this cab?
5) Do you have service or repair records for this vehicle?
There are plenty of other questions you can and should ask but these are the important ones. Another important question is to find out if the taxi has any money owed on it, you dont want to find out somebody has a debt on the taxi after purchasing it.
The “Sale of Goods Act” applies if you’re buying from a dealer, rather than a private party. Under the Act, the taxi shouldn’t have anything majorly wrong with it, outside of normal wear and tear for its age, or problems that were explained to you by the dealer.
The taxi you are buying should be able to be used for the reason you bought it for and it should be in shape for its purpose. You must not forget to get your potential new taxi checked out. Some thing you can get it checked for is whether it has been involved in any accidents, has not been in a wreck, and has not been reported as a stolen vehicle.
Next get the engine checked out to make sure its in working order and also check that the name of the person on the papers/reciepts matches the name of the dealer you are going to buy it off. Enjoy your taxi and keep all the records of service incase you ever wish to sell.
